The Hapless Romantic ! … Episode 5

Start here to know how Sam and Tessa met for the first time.. Episode 1

Unexpected Encounter

The days turned into weeks, and rehearsals for the cultural fest continued to be Sam’s excuse to catch glimpses of Tessa. Their casual conversations at the canteen had become a comforting routine, each word building a fragile bridge between them. He learned about her love for music, her dream of becoming a software engineer and touring Europe (onsite opportunities that her sister Reena always speaks about), and her deep affection for her sister, Reena.

One afternoon, as Sam and Vikram were leaving the canteen after their practice session, they bumped into Tessa walking towards the library. Vikram greeted her with a playful, “Hey Tessa! Skipping the MC rehearsals today?”

Tessa, slightly flustered, replied, “Actually, I have an assignment due tomorrow, and I need some study material. You guys heading somewhere?”

Sam, said, “We were just heading back to our hostel. We could walk you to the library if you want.”

Tessa hesitated for a moment, then nodded her thanks. The walk to the library was filled with light conversation, mostly initiated by Vikram. Sam, usually talkative, found himself tongue-tied in Tessa’s presence. He stole glances at her, mesmerized by the way her hair swayed with each step and the animated way she spoke about her favorite authors.

As they reached the library, Tessa turned to them, a hint of nervousness in her voice. “Thanks for walking me, guys. I really appreciate it.”

Vikram, sensing the awkwardness, winked at Sam and said, “See you both tomorrow at rehearsals! Don’t be late, especially you, Sam. Gopi sir won’t be too happy.”

With a wave goodbye, Vikram left them standing at the library entrance. Sam felt a sudden surge of panic. He was alone with Tessa, something he had secretly craved but now found himself unprepared for.

He cleared his throat and mumbled, “So, good luck with your assignment.”

Tessa smiled politely. “Thanks. You too, for the play.”

The silence stretched between them, thick and uncomfortable. Sam desperately wanted to say something, anything, to break the awkwardness. But the words wouldn’t come.

Just then, Tessa’s phone buzzed in her hand. She glanced at the screen, her smile widening. “Oh, that’s Reena! I guess I should take this.”

Before Sam could respond, she was already engrossed in her conversation, her voice filled with excitement. He watched her walk away, a pang of disappointment settling in his heart. He realized that despite their growing connection, there was still a distance between them, a bridge yet to be fully built.
